FAQs

How much notice do I get for an exam date?

Enrollers will receive a minimum of three weeks' notice.

How do I defer from an exam?

All deferments will incur the set deferment fee. Note that exams cannot be deferred over calendar years.

If I withdraw or cancel an examination, am I entitled to a refund?

Yes, where medical and/or other extenuating circumstances prevent a candidate from sitting the exam, 50 per cent of the enrolment fee will be refunded.

AMEB must receive a written request in addition to appropriate supporting documentation. Cheques will be made payable to the enroller.

Can I receive my results over the phone?

No, results will not be given over the telephone. Please allow five business days for the processing and administration of all reports prior to delivery via Australia Post.

Does completing an AMEB grade contribute to my Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)?

Yes. Some subjects have been recognised by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and may contribute toward a student's Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). In most cases if you have completed Grade 4 or higher — in conjunction with any theory requirements — you will gain additional points.

To obtain your credits:

  • Obtain your Learning Unique Identifier number (LUI number) from your learning provider
  • Advise AMEB of your LUI number
  • AMEB will advise QCAA of your results directly.

You can access further information at the QCAA website.

Can completing AMEB exams give me a QTAC selection rank?

Yes. You may receive an alternative Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) selection rank if you have completed Grade 7 and above practical, and Grade 3 and above theory. More information is available at the QTAC website.

How do I find a teacher or accompanist?

AMEB does not recommend teachers. Please contact the Music Teachers' Association of Queensland (MTAQ) or Communication, Speech and Performance Teachers Inc. Please contact the Accompanists’ Guild of Queensland if you require an accompanist.

Why are there closing dates and late fees?

More than 19,000 people enrol in AMEB exams in Queensland each year. Closing dates are essential to accurately schedule exams. Scheduling commences the day after the closing dates and is an intensive process. Enrolments received after the outlined closing date will incur a late fee.

Can I ask for a special request(s)?

Yes, all special requests and notification of unavailability must be made at the time of enrolment. While every effort is made to meet your needs, this is not always possible, particularly if you request your exam to fall at the end of examination sessions.

Do I need to use a grand piano?

Yes, for Grade 8 exams and higher only.

Do I need to do any music theory exams in order to pass my practical exams?

Passing a music theory exam is not mandatory for exams from Preliminary to Grade 5. You may wish — and you are encouraged — to take theory exams as part of your development as a musician.

However, from Grade 6 practical exams and up, you will need to pass a music theory exam in order to gain the qualification for your practical exam. We call this an ‘additional requirement’. Theory exams can be taken either before or after practical exams. However, you won't receive your practical exam certificate until you have passed the theory component (for Grade 6 exams and up).

Additional requirements:

  • Grade 6 practical — Pass, Grade 2 Theory of Music or Musicianship or Music Craft
  • Grade 7 practical — Pass, Grade 3 Theory of Music or Musicianship or Music Craft
  • Grade 8 practical — Pass, Grade 4 Theory of Music or Musicianship or Music Craft
  • Certificate of Performance — Pass, Grade 5 Theory of Music or Musicianship or Music Craft
  • AMusA practical — Pass, Grade 5 Theory of Music or Musicianship or Music Craft
  • LMusA practical — Pass, Grade 6 Theory of Music or Musicianship or Music Craft
